Flowers being arranged by a London funeral florist

The approach

One florist,
one brief at a time.

Sympathy Flowers London exists because the pace and scale of commercial floristry leave no room for the kind of attention a funeral tribute deserves — and because no single shop, however good, can be local to every London family.

So we have built something different: a curated network of trusted local florists, one in every borough. Each commission is held by one florist from first conversation to delivery — there is no handover, no team of strangers who inherit a brief they did not take.

Our partner florists work with seasonal and sustainably sourced material, from growers in the UK, Netherlands and France. We do not stock a ready-made catalogue; every piece is composed to its brief.

"The piece should recall the person, not demonstrate the florist."

— Network principle

How it works

A network of trusted
local florists.

The model behind Sympathy Flowers London is straightforward and unusual at the same time. Rather than running a single shop in one corner of the city — and asking every borough to share the same delivery van — we coordinate a small number of carefully chosen funeral florists, one for each part of Greater London. When a brief comes in, it is composed by the florist whose studio is closest to the venue and delivered by the same person who arranged the piece.

The benefits of this arrangement are concrete. The flowers travel less, so they arrive in better condition. The florist who carries the piece knows the venue — the chapel of rest, the funeral director, the typical floor plan, the protocol around the cortège. There is no van rota, no relay between composer and courier, and no piece that sits for hours in transit before the family sees it. The florist who shaped the brief is the florist who places the tribute.

We have spent several years assembling this network, meeting florists in person, visiting their workshops, watching them compose. Every partner has been working in funeral floristry for at least five years, and every partner is a small studio rather than a large multi-shop chain. The standards are the same across the network: seasonal sourcing, hand composition, unbranded delivery, a single point of contact from first conversation to placement at the venue.

Standards & sourcing

Seasonal, sustainably
sourced.

Our partner florists work with seasonal material wherever the brief permits. The British and European growing calendar shapes most of what we compose: garden roses in summer, anemones and ranunculus in spring, paperwhite narcissus and eucalyptus in winter, hydrangea and English peonies through July and August. When a family asks for a specific bloom out of season, we source it from growers in the Netherlands and France with whom we have standing relationships, but we will always tell you when a bloom is available and when it is not, and what a season-led alternative would look like.

Floristry foam is used sparingly. For graveside and casket work where structure is essential, we use bio-based foam from sustainable suppliers; for hand-tied bouquets and posies we use no foam at all. Ribbons are natural fibre — silk, raffia or cotton — rather than synthetic; greenery is gathered locally where the venue permits, particularly English ivy, eucalyptus and bay. We do not stock a ready-made catalogue; every piece is composed to its brief, in the palette and at the scale the family asks for.

What we hold to

A small set of principles.

These principles are not a marketing claim. They are the working agreement we have with every florist in the network, and the contract we hold with the families who write to us.

One florist, one brief

The same person who takes your brief composes the piece and carries it to the door.

Composition over catalogue

We build each piece to its brief. We do not default to a pre-made arrangement.

Restraint over abundance

We never overload a tribute. Restraint is often the more truthful answer.

Quiet delivery

Unbranded packaging, no uniform, no invoice in the box. The delivery should be a gesture, not a transaction.

Trade & funeral directors

A working relationship
with the profession.

A meaningful share of our work is for funeral directors, crematorium chapel coordinators, hospice liaison teams and venue managers across Greater London. We hold trade accounts with funeral homes from Albin's of Rotherhithe to Kenyon's in Westminster, with chapel coordinators at Honor Oak, Mortlake, Golders Green and Putney Vale, and with hospice teams at Marie Curie, St Christopher's and the Royal Trinity Hospice. Trade accounts include consolidated monthly invoicing, priority composition ahead of the cortège, on-site placement and retrieval at the venue, and a single point of contact across our team.

For coordinators planning multi-tribute services — principal spray plus letter tributes plus chapel pieces, often for the same family — we hold the entire commission as one brief. The palette is co-ordinated across pieces, the timing is choreographed with the funeral director's running order, and our florist arrives 30 to 60 minutes before the cortège to place the tributes according to the venue's floor plan. After the service we collect the flowers, deliver them to a wake or a graveside, or dry the most personal stems for a framed pressing returned to the family two weeks on.

International clients

Ordering from
abroad.

A meaningful proportion of our briefs come from outside the United Kingdom — family members in New York, Sydney, Paris and Lagos who cannot attend a London service in person but want a tribute placed on their behalf. The workflow is straightforward. You write to us in your evening with the venue, the funeral director's name and the time of the service. We confirm the brief by your morning and the piece is composed and delivered while you sleep. By the time you wake, a discreet photograph from the venue is in your inbox.

Our team operates in English, French, Italian and Spanish. Translators are available on request for ten further languages, including Arabic, Mandarin and Russian. The hand-written card on the tribute can be in any script the family will recognise, including non-Latin scripts. Payment from international cards has no surcharge.

By design

What we do not do.

Some of what shapes the work is what we have decided not to offer. The list is deliberate.

  • We do not run a retail shop. There is no walk-in studio, no card display, no consumer-facing storefront. Every brief is agreed by email or our contact form.
  • We do not operate a telephone line. All briefs are handled in writing. This keeps the palette, the venue and the timing in one place where nothing is mis-heard or forgotten under pressure.
  • We are not on any funeral director's panel. We do not pay referral fees and we do not accept them. The price the family sees is the price the family pays.
  • We do not stock a ready-made catalogue. Every piece is composed to its brief. The website shows examples; the tribute is built to the family's wishes.
  • We do not advertise. Almost every new client comes through the recommendation of a funeral director, a family member or a colleague we have worked with before.
  • We do not photograph services. The single discreet photograph we send to international clients is of the tribute alone — never of the family, never of the casket, never of mourners.
